Clear flint glass ‘goblet’ / [celery] vase by Mattthew Turnbull, Cornhill Glass Works, Sunderland. RD 219638, allocated 4 October 1893. Max. height 17.1cm, foot rim diameter 9.5cm, max. top rim diameter12cm. Weight 792gm. Stepped foot with star pattern beneath; hexagonal faceted stem and exterior base of bowl; bulbous bottom of bowl sides has 9 deeply-indented ovals externally, bordered by a zig-zag pattern above and below; flared top of bowl with scalloped edge (eighteen ‘scallops’), each scallop marked externally by a vertical rib of glass (each rib comprised of 19 pyramidal prisms). Rd. No. 219638 raised on interior base of bowl. Single vertical exterior mould seam to one side. Founded in 1859, the company moved to the Cornhill Glass Works in 1863. The firm registered 15 Registered Designs between 1879 and 1898. By the 1950s, the company had become largely dependent on supplying F.W. Woolworth for their survival, but lost the contract n 1953 and ceased trading inn the same year.
