Marquetry/Intarsio
|
This technique involved adding prepared bits of glass to a parison and marvering them in. The bits are shaped beforehand and sometimes engraved or etched. In the example shown, this has revealed the multiple layers of the bit itself (the engraving here may have been done after it was on the piece). The object may then have additional layers of glass cased over it. Galle, Moser and Harrach are a few of the bigger producers of Art Nouveau marquetry glass; Steuben also made it under the name Intarsia ("Intarsio" is Italian for marquetry). More recent producers include Barovier & Toso.
This Moser vase is on display at the Corning Museum of Glass.
