Diamond Point Engraving
This is a photo of the top portion of a large Roemer from about the 17th C, displayed at the Corning Museum of Glass. It is engraved using a stylus with a diamond tip that scratches the glass.

The Dutch were especially proficient and prolific diamond point engravers. For a much better photo of the art, see this link: http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/images/aria/bk/z/bk-kog-117.z

Another type of diamond point engraving creates an image with thousands of tiny dots made by a diamond-tipped stylus; this fine, laborious process is called stipple engraving.
