Seguso Hippo

In 1938 Flavio Poli designed a series of animals that were blown personally by Archimede Seguso and finished in the corroso technique using hydrofluoric acid, a technique not in use since the 1960's. Included within this series was a figure of a hippo semi submerged with its mouth closed. An example of this can be found in the book "Animals in Glass" as item No 64. What we have here is the figure of the hippo with its mouth agape and head thrown back which is an altogether more striking figure. Many reputable people in the field of Italian glass have seen either the actual figure or pictures of it and no one has refuted the authenticity of this piece, similarly no one has ever seen another example of this variant. Measurements are right, the colour is right and the similarity to the more usual examples is there for all to see.
