VAS VITREUM - Exclusive Crystal and Genuine Craft
Vas Vitreum AB - a Swedish Studio Glasshouse with a production of exclusive crystal items. The young, glassartist Mikael Kenlind - who passes the family glass tradition since five generations - and his co-worker Dan Hellborg, create their own unique art glass in a combination of new and traditional techniques. The wide collection holds everything from small gifts to large extreme pieces of art glass.
Vas Vitreum is a family-owned and run company where fourth and fifth generations within the glass industry work together to create art glass as well as glass for everyday use.
Vas Vitreum Studio was founded in 1985 in the medieval town of Vadstena by master engraver Lars Börnesson who runs the business with his son Michael Kenlind, master glassblower and artist/designer. Michael has grown up with art glass and there was never any doubt as to what his career path would be. With Vas Vitreum, he has the opportunity to combine two careers that are normally kept separate at the larger glassworks: glassblower and designer. His co-worker is master glassblower Dan Hellborg who brings his experience from the larger glassworks in Sweden. Lars Börnesson, one of Sweden's most talented engravers, has also worked many years at the larger glassworks in Sweden. One of his masterpieces is the large Maria window in Linköping's cathedral -- probably the world's largest collection of engraved windows which took 10 years to complete.
Most of the art glass at Vas Vitreum is made in accordance with the old traditions -- it is handmade and many of their pieces are freeblown, that is blown without moulds. Their technical mastery is best seen in their unique art glass pieces which are often created with a technique called "hot work," an artistically demanding and dynamic way of working. Hot work is work done at the furnace whereas cold work is work done after the piece has cooled, such as engraving, sandblasting, etc.
