Wheel cut cameo glass
Cut cameo glass produces depth and shading which very few other techniques can accomplish. Cameo usually refers to glass with layers of contrasting color; the layers are cut and/or etched through to create a design in relief. Cut cameo was practiced in 1st C A.D. Rome with remarkable skill both in the casing of the glass and the cutting of it; shards with 6 layers of glass have been found! In "modern" times it reached the zenith of its popularity and accomplishment in the last quarter of the 19th C in the Stourbridge area.

The pieces pictured are in the Corning Museum of Glass. On the left is "possibly Webb" and on the right is Richardson.
